Apraxia Packet For Improving Verbal Accy of Concepts & Personal Info
Why this treatment packet was developed:
Apraxic individuals learn best by receiving the maximum amount of cues. They need to “hear” and “see” and “feel” the words. They also need to REPEAT to improve their understanding and ability to coordinate their muscle movements. That is why we feel that a READ, HEAR, WRITE and SAY approach is worthwhile for children with apraxia. The more that they can work on the targeted word, the more likely that their minds will make better planning, sequencing and coordination of the planned muscle movement for the speech production of the word and it will also give their minds a better chance of actually understanding the word or concept. Knowing the word or concept being targeted will in return, make it easier for them to produce it. Familiarity to a concept or word, makes it easier for the child to know what the word is and will even give them a chance to predict the difficulty. This is when their speech techniques of talking louder, sitting up, slowing down, and over-articulation strategies that are taught all throughout the unit will come into play. A student who realizes that a difficult word or concept needs to be said, may predict that they have to utilize all of their learned speech strategies for clear production and if they utilize their strategies, they may just produce the word more clearly and accurately.
Why are we targeting concepts and personal information?
Because knowing these things is teaching better functional skills. Functional skills are important. They provide an individual with essential knowledge that will help them understand and communicate in their home and school environments better. They also help a student communicate more effectively and will help to advance their literacy skills needed for school success! The concepts targeted in this packet are functional and we can’t think of anything more productive than that to teach.
We truly hope that this packet becomes one that you rely on daily and that it helps a tremendous amount of your students know and say heir concepts and personal information better.
